Engineering marvel, design icon, synonym for luxury – Concorde is the supersonic plane that made the world a smaller place. She was built as a joint project between Britain and France, and gets her name from the French word for harmony or union. Just 20 planes were built and 14 flew commercially, seven for British Airways and seven for Air France. For 26 years she brought the future to air travel, and even 10 years after she was retired, Concorde still captures the imagination of so many people.
Welcome to the second edition of my travel clinic, where I share advice I’ve picked up over years of planning trips. These are the tips and tricks that I use to keep costs down and make my travel life easier. The first edition was all about accommodation, but this time we’re talking flights. I have to admit I’m happier travelling by train, but there’s a lot of the world you can only really get to on board a plane. The flight might only be a relatively small part of the trip, but that doesn’t mean that delays and bad service can’t spoil your holiday.
Despite being a travel obsessive, I’m not the biggest fan of flying. But that wasn’t going to stop me from embracing a bit of New Zealand’s famous adventurous spirit while I was out there. Bungee jumping was a step too far, but a helicopter trip I could do. The original plan was to do a heli hike on the Franz Josef Glacier, but after two mornings in a row spent sitting in the tour office waiting for the storms to pass, the trip was called off again and I was out of time. Or so I though, until we got to Lake Tekapo.
