It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of weekend breaks, but for a short trip I’d usually go for somewhere in the UK and get there by train or car. Having to drive for four hours to get to Gatwick, braving the weekend check-in queues and the budget airline scrum always seemed a bit too much effort to fly somewhere just for a couple of days.
Montmartre’s Fête des Vendanges is a harvest festival with a difference. Each October, this area of northern Paris holds a five-day celebration of the grape harvest at Montmartre’s one remaining vineyard, with eating, drinking, dancing and fireworks. At the heart of it all is the parade, with samba dancers, musicians and groups representing different confréries – brotherhoods or societies. These can be food producers, like the strawberry growers or garlic farmers, or other more unusual groups, like the order of bald men with their symbol of a comb.
