It’s no secret that my trip to the Greek islands of Santorini and Ios was one of my travel highlights of the past year. The country has a special combination of fascinating history, stunning scenery, great food and bags of sunshine that makes it irresistible. I’m already planning my next Greek escape – and with 277 inhabited islands as well as the mainland to explore there’s enough to keep me going for a while yet.
One thing I love about living in the UK is the huge variety of different landscapes we have packed into a small country, all the way from the highlands of Scotland to the south coast – and beyond. Sitting 100 miles south of mainland Britain, Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands. It was part of France until the thirteenth century, so mixes up French place names and influences with English ones to create something unique.
Earth, water, fire and air – the four elements that make up life on earth and which we tend to take for granted. But a new photography challenge got me thinking about the elements – how they’re expressed in the world around us and how you can capture them in a photo. In the Explore the Elements competition, bloggers are being asked to share photos which represent each of the elements. The categories are open to interpretation though, and you don’t need to be too literal.
If you had to choose five past destinations to go back to, which would they be? Although I’m always looking forward to the next place I would like to visit – and have a travel wish-list which only ever seems to get longer – there are a few previous destinations which really captured my heart.
Outdoor gear store Blacks have teamed up with adventure holiday company Explore for a new photo competition which is all about epic adventures in the great outdoors. The top prize is £2000 to spend on one of Explore’s trips across the world and four runners up will each get £150 to spend at Blacks. Explore have an amazing range of trips on every continent – top of my shortlist would be their safari and wine trip around South Africa or maybe their tour around the Mayan ruins in Belize and Guatemala.
Another week, another photography competition! I can never resist an excuse to go through my old photos though, particularly when there’s a prize involved. And this is a good one, with compact cameras and a £1000 overall prize up for grabs. After Capturing the Colours earlier this month, this time I’ve been searching out my favourite transportation-related photos that represent travel by air, road, rail and sea as part of the Travel Your Way competition. Which one do you like best?
I’m always up for a chance to share some of my travel memories, and the latest excuse for a root around the travel archives is the blogger relay from lowcostholidays.com. In this Olympic-inspired competition, bloggers are being asked to share their top three travel memories before passing on the baton to another blogger. The prize-winning team will be the one with the longest chain of posts by the end of September – when hopefully team purple, led by Neil at Backpacks and Bunkbeds, will be victorious.
